LOCAL PARKS:

Acres of parks and miles of trails offer an abundance of recreational opportunities for every resident. The 40-acre Whitney Community Park includes four lighted baseball fields, two soccer fields, and playgrounds. While the miles of trails and footpaths throughout will give residents easy walk able access to the community park, Whitney High School, and local retail centers.

Whitney Park has lighted sports fields for soccer, baseball and softball, restrooms, pre-school-aged and school-aged playgrounds, picnic facilities, and a water playground. The water playground will operate daily during warm months of the year. An extensive pathway system and off-street parking lots are also included in the planning. This beautiful new community park connects to Whitney High School by a bridge that spans over open space.

Elementary School
Sunset Ranch Elementary School, is currently under construction and tentatively scheduled to open in August of 2010. In the meantime elementary students will be going to a local schools who have room.

High School
Located across the street is The Brand New Whitney High School which was constructed with a full broadcast studio capable of broadcasting not only within the campus cable system but also in the wider community. In all, the school's construction cost $82 million.

History Buff's: Whitney's name was a significant subject of debate, as the school's first two proposed names were associated too closely with other schools in the area. The school was initially designated Granite Ridge High School, which was deemed too similar to RUSD's Granite Oaks Middle School. It was then designated as Liberty High School, but the name was associated with the rival Lincoln High School. Rocklin Unified School District finally decided on "Whitney" in honor of Joel Parker Whitney, the man who suggested that his successful Boston businessman father, George Whitney, invest in the 1854 development of Placer County, which was then a major locale for gold seeking Argonauts. George Whitney would later found and develop the city of Rocklin. Additional debate revolved around the school's mascot and colors; deliberation around data collected via survey from the city of Rocklin and other Rocklin Unified School District entities ultimately convinced the district administration to choose the wildcat and the colors of maroon and gold. GO WILD CATS!!!
